I’ve Won the Liebster Award!
I am extremely excited to announce that I’ve been nominated for the Liebster Award! This is my first blogging award and it’s special because in order to receive it, nominees must be nominated by their peers. Specifically, the Liebster Award is an online award that is given in support of the blogging community by other bloggers.
Thanks very much to Angela, owner of Global Gadding, for my nomination. Angela and I have collaborated on several articles and it’s been great working with her. She and her husband live and work in the United Kingdom and travel during their free time. They have journeyed all over the globe and just like Hawaiian Brian, they work hard to get the most out of their precious vacation time.

10 Questions from Global Gadding
1.What’s your most memorable travel experience?
My most memorable travel experience happened in 2013 when my wife and I visited St. John in the Virgin Islands. We decided it would be fun to walk from the Atlantic Ocean side of the island to the Caribbean Ocean side of the island. I enjoyed this experience very much because it was just the two of us walking through the rain forest. We didn’t see another person for hours. We saw amazing wildlife up close as well as some sugar mill ruins, but the highlight of the trek was taking a break on our very own private beach in the middle of paradise!
2.What is your biggest struggle as a Travel Blogger?
I’ve had some steep learning curves to mount in a short period of time, including learning how to operate WordPress and learn some coding, but my biggest struggle has been attracting traffic to my site. I’m marketing on social media, including Pinterest, Twitter, and Facebook, and I’m starting to gain some traction, but I still have to work extremely hard. I’m hoping the snowball effect will commence soon!
3.Out of all the places that you have travelled to, which one could you envisage living in permanently?
I could definitely picture myself living in Hawaii. To me it is the definition of paradise. The weather is always warm and the scenery is picture-perfect. There are tons of hiking trails to explore as well as waterfalls and beaches to discover. Life travels at a slower pace in Hawaii, which allows us to enjoy the simple pleasures of life and not get too caught up in the daily grind.
4.Which country would you never want to visit again, and why?
I’ve truly enjoyed all of the countries I’ve visited, but if I had to choose one I’d never visit again I would pick Barbados. The pressure to buy something or get in a cab is really elevated compared to all of the other islands and countries I’ve been to. The constant harassment only occurred in the city, so once I got outside the city center I didn’t experience any of this pressure. Barbados is still a gorgeous island where you can snorkel with sea turtles and enjoy beautiful beaches, so don’t let me deter you from going!
5.Describe your worst travel moment to date.
Thankfully, my worst travel moment really isn’t all that bad. I’ve never been scammed (that I am aware of), but I did nearly miss my flight from Paris back to the US. During planning for my trip to Paris I was more focused on what I wanted to see while I was over there than the logistics of my return. While I usually site many sources for my information to double check the validity, when researching how long it took to get to the airport I was careless. I used one source, didn’t double check it, and was scolded by the airline personnel for being so late. Lesson learned – double check everything!
6.What does the word “success” equate to in terms of your own blog?
Ultimately, I’d like to be a travel resource for people around the world. I thoroughly enjoy traveling and I want others to have amazing travel experiences and maximize their precious vacation time by reading my content. I believe as a result of achieving this goal, I’ll have tons of traffic to my site and my blog will also be cash flow positive.
7.How do you stay healthy while travelling?
With my travel style I am never away from home for more than two weeks, so staying healthy isn’t too much of a worry for me. I do quite a bit of walking on vacation just from exploring, and I use public transportation, which both provide me with plenty of exercise. I like to indulge a little when eating on vacation, but I don’t indulge at every meal. Also, I slather on the sunscreen like it’s my job when I’m outdoors on a sunny day because tanning isn’t my priority and I don’t like to get fried.
8.What is your least favourite part of blogging and why?
I enjoy the networking and writing for my blog, but the continuous marketing is my least favorite part. Marketing takes so much energy and time, and there’s no guarantee that all of my efforts will be rewarded. I spend about two hours per day promoting Hawaiian Brian articles, quotes, collaborations and my brand name across my social media accounts. That’s a really significant amount of time that I would rather be dedicating toward writing an article to help my readers achieve their travel goals, but I guess without the marketing I wouldn’t have as many readers.
9.Tell me 3 facts about yourself as a person.
I have been playing tennis since I was 12 years old and I still play to this day. I had a successful college career in which I became a member of the all-conference team. Recently, I have transitioned my tennis skills in to ping pong skills, and I am currently the official ping pong champion at my work. I am glad the thousands of dollars my parents shelled out in tennis lessons is now being used at the work ping pong table – I am sure my parents and tennis coach are proud!
I have become a lawn care nut. Lawn care is something that had never interested me until I moved into my current house. The love hate relationship with my yard ended when last fall I decided I had enough and burned the whole yard up with round-up. I reseeded the yard and now my lawn is gorgeous. I am determined to have the best yard in the neighborhood this year.
The controlling thought in my life is that the purpose of my life is to be happy. A day doesn’t go by when I am not thinking about what I can do to make my life more fulfilling so I can achieve happiness at its highest level. This is the reason I enjoying traveling so much. I enjoy the challenge of trying to maximize my vacation time as well as executing the itinerary that I planned for my trip. Also, it’s just fun to go on adventures! Sometimes I feel like I am Indiana Jones and when I am exploring ancient sites for the very first time.
10.Who is the quirkiest person you have met while travelling?
Because it’s difficult to find quirks in a person with a fleeting meeting, not too many people fit this bill. However, there is one that comes to mind. Luv, my tour guide in India who I got to spend an entire week with, had some interesting quirks, but he was also very genuine as well. Absolutely perfect at his job, he told entertaining stories, bits of culture, and laughed the hardest at all his corny jokes. He helped us navigate our “fan club,” otherwise known as aggressive street vendors, and found spice men when spice girls weren’t available (men selling spices). Luv enhanced my trip to India and I wouldn’t hesitate to go on another tour with him.
